Eskoms Essential Maintenance Power Outage in Soweto for 9 Hours

Power utility Eskom has a crucial plan for some parts of Soweto, Gauteng. The disruption is not meant to inconvenience but to ensure the necessary maintenance on the distribution power lines. Scheduled for Tuesday, 21 January, the nine-hour power outage will affect areas like Jabulani, Mofolo North (Sgodiphola), and Zondi.

Eskom Apologizes:

Eskom acknowledges any inconvenience caused by this maintenance activity. However, they are prepared for unforeseen circumstances that may hinder the planned electricity maintenance.

Meanwhile, City Power took action against meter tampering at Johannesburg Social Housing Company (JOSHCO) flats in Kliptown Square. Responding to reports of illegal bypassing of newly installed prepaid meters, over 120 meters were disconnected as a consequence.

City Power’s Response:

In response to meter tampering incidents reported by residents post Token Identifier (TID) rollover project last November, City Power’s Revenue Protection team collaborated with law enforcement agencies to disconnect power supply from housing units with bypassed prepaid meters.

The affected meters were promptly removed alongside circuit breakers to prevent unauthorized reconnection of power supply. Customers who tampered with their meters faced penalties exceeding R14,000 for single-phase connections and potentially surpassing R30,000 for three-phase connections where meters needed replacement.

Stern Warning Issued:

City Power emphasized its zero-tolerance policy towards meter tampering within its supply areas and reiterated the consequences customers could face if found engaging in such unlawful activities.
