Adegboyega Oyetola, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, is leading a significant effort to improve safety on Nigerian waters. During a recent event in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state, he reiterated the government’s dedication to reducing the tragic loss of lives that has been occurring on the country’s waterways.
“We are committed to ending unnecessary loss of lives on our waters,”
Minister Oyetola stated emphatically. This commitment is part of a broader initiative by the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy to prioritize life-saving interventions in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Hope Agenda.
The distribution of life jackets in various states such as Niger, Bayelsa, Anambra, and now Akwa Ibom and Ogun is a key component of this strategy. The goal is to promote a culture of safety, particularly in riverine communities where water transport plays a vital role in daily life.
Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom state underscored the importance of these efforts by highlighting that the life jackets symbolize hope, protection, and the value placed on human life.
“They represent more than just safety equipment; they represent our commitment to safeguarding lives,”
he emphasized.
Bola Oyebamiji, the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), also expressed appreciation for the distribution and handover of life jackets. He commended both the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy and the Akwa Ibom state government for their collaborative approach to enhancing waterway safety and security.
As part of the initiative, there was a practical demonstration on how to properly wear a life jacket—a crucial aspect considering its effectiveness depends on correct usage. This hands-on approach aimed to educate water users on responsible practices during their activities while emphasizing proper maintenance for long-term durability.
The event brought together associations representing boat operators, commuters, and community leaders who play essential roles in promoting safe practices on Nigerian waters. The collective effort between government entities, local authorities, and stakeholders reflects a unified commitment towards ensuring safer maritime operations across the country.
