The Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP) has launched the PURE Growth Fund to accelerate the Productive Use of Renewable Energy (PURE) within Tanzania’s agri-food systems. This transformative initiative aims to unlock low-emission development pathways for the country by enhancing competitive value chain development in the agriculture sector and increasing access to modern energy services in rural areas.
Tanzania has set priorities to boost the share of renewable energy in its generation mix to 75% by 2030. The fund, with an initial offering of €2.5 million ($2,818,013), targets the intersection of agriculture and energy, two sectors that play a significant role in sub-Saharan Africa’s economy.
According to Merja Laakso, Director of Programmes at REEEP, the program aims to de-risk the private sector and go beyond simple technology deployment. It focuses on holistic ecosystem integration to build a stronger market for PURE technologies and services while promoting sustainable value chains. This approach is designed to empower local communities by integrating renewable energy solutions into agriculture, thereby increasing incomes and improving livelihoods across Tanzania.
Eva Kelly, CEO of REEEP, emphasized the potential of renewable energy to revolutionize agri-food value chains globally. She highlighted how this initiative could lead to long-term growth for clean energy Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and agribusinesses by enabling them to expand operations, enhance profitability, and establish robust customer bases.
Minister Mohamed Omary Mchengerwa from Tanzania expressed enthusiasm about this endeavor as it aligns with their mission of empowering local communities through renewable energy solutions in agriculture. He stated,
“The launch of the PURE Growth Fund marks a significant step forward in our mission to empower local communities by integrating renewable energy solutions into agriculture.”
Companies are encouraged to apply for funding ranging from €250,000 to €1,000,000 ($281,801-$1,1277), along with technical assistance and policy engagement. The application window remains open until August 1st.
