Construction has officially commenced on what is being hailed as Angola’s most significant privately-owned solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant. This groundbreaking project, spearheaded by Angolan company Quilemba Solar Lda in collaboration with TotalEnergies, Sonangol, and Maurel & Prom, marks a pivotal moment in the country’s renewable energy landscape.
Located near Lubango in southern Angola, the Quilemba power plant is poised to revolutionize the region’s energy sector by providing electricity to tens of thousands of households. With an initial capacity of 35MWp and plans for a potential expansion to add another 45MWp in its second phase, this state-of-the-art facility is set to go operational by the first half of 2026.
“We are very pleased to contribute to the realization of the Quilemba solar power plant, a project that is perfectly in line with our ambitions in terms of sustainable development,”
expressed Maurel & Prom CEO Olivier de Langavant during the project’s groundbreaking ceremony. The strategic choice of Angola as the site for M&P’s inaugural industrial solar venture underscores their commitment to fostering long-term partnerships with the Angolan government.
The significance of this ambitious undertaking extends beyond national borders. According to AFSIA’s Africa Solar Outlook 2025 report, released earlier this year, Angola emerged as one of the top five countries in Africa for new solar capacity installations in 2024. This accolade not only underscores Angola’s commitment to decarbonization but also positions it as a key player driving renewable energy adoption on the continent.
In light of these developments, industry experts and environmental advocates emphasize the pivotal role such projects play in mitigating climate change and transitioning towards a more sustainable energy future. As Africa continues to harness its abundant solar resources, initiatives like the Quilemba power plant serve as beacons of progress towards achieving energy security while reducing carbon emissions.
The ceremonial launch event on May 16th, 2025 was attended by esteemed dignitaries including government officials from Huíla Province and representatives from various stakeholders. The presence of local traditional authorities further underscored community involvement and support for this transformative initiative aimed at powering homes across Angola sustainably.
As construction progresses steadily towards completion, anticipation mounts within both local communities and global renewable energy circles about how this landmark project will shape Angola’s energy landscape and contribute significantly towards achieving sustainable development goals.
Through innovation-driven collaborations like these, Angola paves a path towards a greener tomorrow while setting new benchmarks for private sector-led renewable energy ventures across Africa. The journey towards a more sustainable future has undoubtedly begun with each panel installed at Quilemba – illuminating homes today while promising a brighter future for generations to come.
