Australias Climate Inaction Channeling Anger for Change

Australians, it’s time to roll up your sleeves and get ready. The year 2025 kicked off with a maddening sense of déjà vu as climate change policies from both major political parties continue to fall short, wrapped in a thick blanket of half-truths and deception. It’s enough to make your blood boil.

In the red corner, we have the Liberals singing the same old tune – no targets, no push for renewables, and certainly no plans to wean off coal or gas. On the other side, Labor is trying to sell us on minor tweaks while quietly giving nods of approval to new coal projects under the guise of “extensions.” It’s a merry-go-round of political posturing that has left many feeling disillusioned and fed up.

The narrative hasn’t changed much since the last election cycle. Back then, I warned that neither party was being transparent about climate change. Fast forward to today, and it seems like silence has become the new normal when it comes to tackling this pressing issue. The ALP and Liberal parties are engaged in a theatrical performance while emissions continue unabated.

Climate change doesn’t care for political games or grandstanding. It moves at its own pace, indifferent to our human constructs of time and compromise. We can’t afford to keep playing these rhetorical games while our planet suffers.

2024 rang alarm bells across the globe as temperatures soared to record heights. Each passing month seemed determined to outdo its predecessor in a race towards an uncertain future. The numbers don’t lie – 2024 was scorching hot, setting ominous records along the way.

As we grapple with rising temperatures, another financial storm looms on the horizon – insurance costs are skyrocketing in response to escalating climate-related disasters like the recent fires in LA. Insurance companies aren’t charities; they pass on their losses by jacking up premiums across the board. And guess who bears the brunt? That’s right – everyday Australians feeling the squeeze in their wallets.

But amidst all this chaos and frustration lies a glimmer of hope – you! Yes, you hold immense power in your hands every election cycle. Your vote is not just a checkbox; it’s a call-to-action demanding real change from those seeking office.

Let me be clear: anger alone won’t solve our climate crisis; action will! Remember how communities rallied together during the bushfire crisis? That same spirit needs to permeate our collective consciousness now more than ever.

So as we gear up for yet another election season, let your anger fuel your resolve. Demand accountability from politicians spouting empty promises and media outlets peddling misinformation. Your vote is not just a drop in the ocean; it’s a tidal wave waiting to be unleashed upon complacency.

In this pivotal moment in history, remember that every choice you make carries weight – even at the ballot box where dollars speak louder than words. Don’t settle for mediocre solutions; demand excellence because our future depends on it.

Greg Jericho sums it up perfectly when he says:

“We know from experience…the disaster won’t change policy by major players.”

It’s time for Australians everywhere to rise above despair and transform their anger into meaningful action against climate inaction.
