The summit, which unfolded over two days, saw the absence of two influential figures. Chinese President Xi Jinping opted out of attending, marking the first time since assuming leadership in 2012. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the gathering via video conference, a mode of engagement he has increasingly relied on due to an international arrest warrant stemming from Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
One of the key points raised in the group’s declaration was the concern over rising tariffs, deemed as counter to World Trade Organization rules. The BRICS emphasized that such measures could disrupt global trade, impact supply chains, and introduce uncertainties in the market. In response, President Trump took to social media to warn countries aligning with BRICS’ policies of potential additional tariffs.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who hosted the summit, criticized NATO’s plan to ramp up military spending significantly by 2035, a sentiment echoed in the group’s official statement. Lula emphasized the need to prioritize peace over escalating military investments, highlighting the challenges of investing in war rather than fostering global harmony.
While advocating for reform within Western-led global institutions, Brazil strategically aimed to steer clear of actions that could provoke tariff threats from the U.S. President Trump’s warning of imposing hefty tariffs on the bloc in response to perceived challenges to the dollar underscored the delicate balance countries like Brazil must maintain to safeguard their economies.
In previous summits, efforts were made to explore alternatives to U.S.-dominated payment systems in a bid to circumvent Western sanctions. However, the focus of this year’s gathering centered on less contentious issues like enhancing trade relations among member nations and addressing global health concerns. Ana Garcia, a professor at the Rio de Janeiro Federal Rural University, noted Brazil’s cautious approach, indicating a desire to minimize economic risks and avoid attracting unwanted attention from the Trump administration.
