Chad’s President Mahamat Idriss Deby announced the suspension of visa issuance to U.S. citizens as a response to the Trump administration’s decision to ban Chadians from entering the United States. The move comes after President Donald Trump reinstated a policy from his first term, imposing visa restrictions on 12 countries, including Chad. These countries were accused of having inadequate screening processes and a history of not repatriating citizens who overstay in the U.S.
President Deby expressed Chad’s stance on reciprocity by stating,
“Chad has no planes to offer, no billions of dollars to give but Chad has his dignity and pride.”
This decision reflects Chad’s commitment to equality in diplomatic relations.
The new travel policy affects nations such as Afghanistan, Myanmar, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. Additionally, there will be increased restrictions for visitors from seven other countries under this policy taking effect soon.
In response to the ban imposed on their country by the U.S., various African nations have voiced their concerns. The Republic of Congo denounced being included in the ban due to what they believe is a “misunderstanding
” regarding an armed attack in the U.S., where individuals were incorrectly linked to their nation. Government spokesperson Thierry Moungalla emphasized that Congo does not harbor terrorists nor support terrorism activities. He expressed hope for clarification through diplomatic channels with American authorities.
Sierra Leone is among nations facing heightened travel restrictions under this new policy. Information Minister Chernor Bah assured that Sierra Leone is dedicated to addressing any issues that led to these travel constraints. He stated optimistically, “
We will work with U.S. authorities to ensure progress.”
These reactions highlight the ripple effects caused by international policies and underscore the importance of clear communication and mutual understanding between nations during times of geopolitical tension.
