Demanding Accountability Beyond Tinubu in Nigerian Politics

A chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Abayomi Nurain Mumuni, has some important advice for Nigerians. He believes that accountability should not be limited to just President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. In his view, it is crucial for citizens to also focus on holding their governors and other public officials accountable.

Mumuni emphasized the significance of scrutinizing not only the President but also leaders at the state and local levels. He stressed that while it’s essential to assess Tinubu’s policies and decisions, attention must also be directed towards governors, senators, and elected representatives who are responsible for governance at different levels.

According to Mumuni,

“While it is crucial to hold our President accountable for his policies and decisions, I urge all Nigerians to also direct scrutiny towards the leaders who serve at the state and local levels.”

He highlighted the pivotal role played by governors and legislators in shaping communities through policy-making and its execution.

The APC chieftain expressed concern over a prevailing trend where most blame for national challenges falls solely on the President. Mumuni urged citizens to ask pertinent questions about governance in their respective states. Questions like:

“What measures have been implemented by your governor to improve healthcare, education, and infrastructure?”

He stressed that demanding accountability from all elected officials at every level of government is vital for fostering genuine progress and development in Nigeria. By engaging with state leaders and assessing their performance diligently, citizens can contribute towards creating a more comprehensive understanding of governance issues across the country.

In light of these insights by Mumuni, it becomes clear that a holistic approach to accountability in Nigerian politics is necessary for driving positive change. While national leadership often garners significant attention, effective governance requires active participation from citizens at all levels of government.

It is evident that Mumuni’s call for broader accountability resonates beyond partisan politics. It reflects a fundamental aspect of democratic governance wherein citizen engagement plays a critical role in ensuring transparency, efficiency, and responsiveness from elected officials.

As Nigerians navigate complex political landscapes and societal challenges, Mumuni’s emphasis on multi-level accountability serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility shared by both leaders and citizens in advancing the nation’s welfare. By embracing this ethos of shared accountability, Nigeria can move closer towards realizing its full potential as a vibrant democracy striving for inclusive growth and prosperity.
