Denzel Washington Surprised with Honorary Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival

The Cannes Film Festival stunned Hollywood icon Denzel Washington with an honorary Palme d’Or, recognizing his illustrious four-decade career. The 70-year-old actor, making his debut at the festival, was presented with the prestigious award by director Spike Lee alongside festival heads Thierry Frémaux and Iris Knobloch. Emotion overwhelmed Washington as he graciously accepted the accolade, calling it a “total surprise.” Frémaux paid tribute to Washington with a montage of his iconic roles, including standout performances in films such as Malcolm X and Mo’ Better Blues. Notable achievements like his Oscar-winning role in Glory and his Best Actor win for Training Day were also highlighted. Washington’s presence at Cannes coincided with the premiere of Lee’s latest film, Highest 2 Lowest, marking their first collaboration since Inside Man in 2006. Amidst a tight schedule, Washington managed a quick visit to the festival between Broadway performances of “Othello.” This honor makes Washington the second American actor, following Robert De Niro, to receive the prestigious honorary Palme d’Or this year.
