Detroit’s Initiative to Boost Golf Participation Among Black Community

Detroit is striving to make golf more accessible to Black youth, with efforts led by coaches and community groups to increase interest in the sport. Despite the city’s rich golf history, only a small fraction of high school students actively participate in golf programs, highlighting the need for greater exposure and opportunities. Jesse Hawkins, a coach at Renaissance High School, emphasizes the lack of recognition and investment in golf within the Black community, underscoring the challenge of introducing the sport to a broader demographic.

According to the National Golf Foundation, minority representation in golf remains relatively low, with only about 25% of players identifying as Black, Asian, or Hispanic. To address this disparity, initiatives like the Rocket Classic have allocated significant funds to support programs aimed at introducing golf to young individuals. The PGA event, sponsored by Rocket Companies, has played a pivotal role in promoting golf in Detroit and fostering partnerships to engage local youth.

Trina Scott, Vice President of Civic and Community Affairs at Rocket, emphasizes the importance of accessibility and barrier elimination in attracting Black and brown youth to the sport. Through collaborative efforts and financial support, the goal is to create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for aspiring young golfers in Detroit.
