Ebonyi Ex-Speaker Chukwuma Nwazunku Shifts Allegiance to APC from PDP

A significant political shift recently unfolded in Ebonyi State as Hon. Chukwuma Nwazunku, a former speaker of the State House of Assembly and past member of the Federal House of Representatives, decided to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and join the All Progressives Congress (APC). The announcement was made during a gathering at Ugwuachara where Nwazunku, along with other prominent figures, officially declared their new political allegiance.

Among those who joined Nwazunku in embracing the APC were Hon. Emeka Otozi, slated to be the PDP’s Senatorial Candidate for Ebonyi North in 2023, and several other key members of the party. The move was met with warm acceptance by Chief Patrick Orogbo, representing the state chairman of the APC in Ebonyi Local Government Area. He lauded their decision as bold and strategic while assuring them equal footing within the party structure.

Expressing his admiration for Governor Francis Nwifuru’s governance over the last two years, Amobi highlighted how the governor’s development initiatives had effectively reduced opposition within Ebonyi State. This transformative progress has been gradually unifying diverse political factions into a cohesive entity.

In his statement following his switch to APC, Chief Nwazunku candidly shared his reasons for leaving PDP behind. He expressed disillusionment with PDP’s internal disarray and waning significance. His decision to align with APC stemmed from witnessing Governor Nwifuru’s remarkable achievements alongside President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration at a national level.

Nwazunku vowed to rally his supporters across Ebonyi State to ensure that APC emerges victorious in the forthcoming 2027 general elections. His commitment reflects a growing trend of politicians seeking alignment with parties they believe can drive tangible progress and change.

Political experts view such defections as more than just individual choices; they signify broader shifts in regional power dynamics and ideological alignments. As parties evolve and adapt to changing landscapes, these movements can influence policy directions and governance styles within states like Ebonyi.

The dynamics of political realignments often reveal deeper currents at play—loyalties tested by performance metrics rather than traditional affiliations alone. By emphasizing governance outcomes over partisan labels, leaders like Nwazunku are reshaping how constituents perceive effective leadership—a trend likely to impact future electoral strategies regionally.
