Ex-president Kabila calls Congo justice system instrument of oppression

Former President Joseph Kabila of Congo unleashed a scathing critique of the country’s justice system, following a Senate decision to strip his immunity in connection to alleged ties with the M23 rebel group. Accused of crimes against humanity related to supporting the insurgency in the east, including involvement in civilian massacres, Kabila vehemently denies any association with the rebels. The political fallout extended to suspending his party and seizing assets of its leaders.

In a fiery address, Kabila accused the justice system of neglecting its duties, being manipulated for political gains, and serving as a tool of oppression for a dictatorship clinging to power. His call for the withdrawal of foreign troops from Congo underscored his stance on national sovereignty and territorial integrity, emphasizing his unwavering dedication to the nation.

Having relinquished power in 2018 after nearly two decades in office amidst public unrest, Kabila has been residing mostly in South Africa since late 2023. The Senate’s decision to lift his immunity by an overwhelming majority signaled a potential return to the country, with Kabila expressing intentions to aid in resolving the crisis in the east, where M23 rebels, supported by Rwanda, control significant swathes of land rich in critical minerals.

The prospect of Kabila’s comeback introduces complexities to efforts to quell the rebellion in eastern Congo, a region coveted for its mineral wealth by global powers. The United States, under President Donald Trump’s administration, seeks to broker a peace deal and secure lucrative mineral agreements to attract substantial Western investments to the area, amplifying the stakes of the conflict.

Kabila’s ascendancy to power in 2001 following his father’s assassination marked the beginning of a tumultuous era marred by persistent power struggles. Refusing to step down at the end of his official term in 2016 triggered violent protests, culminating in his eventual departure post the 2018 election. The political landscape in Congo remains volatile, with Kabila’s potential return poised to reshape the ongoing power dynamics and influence the trajectory of the country’s future.
