INECs New RECs Strengthening Electoral Processes Across Nigeria

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recently welcomed six new Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) in a bid to enhance the electoral processes across Nigeria. The swearing-in ceremony, held in Abuja and presided over by Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, marked a significant step towards ensuring effective governance.

Among the newly sworn-in RECs are individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences, bringing a mix of electoral expertise and private sector knowledge to their roles. This strategic selection aims to bolster the Commission’s capabilities in overseeing fair and transparent elections.

During the ceremony, Prof. Yakubu emphasized the vital role of RECs in upholding the electoral legal framework and engaging stakeholders with transparency. He highlighted the gravity of their responsibilities, stating,

“The conduct of elections is not only a huge responsibility but also a sacred duty.”

Two of the appointees, Dr. Johnson Alalibo Sinikiem and Mukhtar Umar Gajiram, were reappointed for a second term due to their commendable performance during their initial tenure. Their reappointment reflects recognition of their dedication and effectiveness in managing electoral affairs.

Additionally, 11 existing RECs were redeployed to new states as part of organizational restructuring efforts. This realignment seeks to optimize operational efficiency within the Commission and leverage diverse skill sets across different regions.

Prof. Yakubu underscored the importance of adhering to ethical standards and fulfilling duties conscientiously, warning against any acts of defiance or misconduct. He urged all RECs to lead with integrity, stating that

“you must at all times be guided by the electoral legal framework…and exercise effective supervision.”

Furthermore, he highlighted that stakeholder engagement is paramount for fostering trust in the electoral process. By maintaining open communication channels and welcoming constructive feedback, RECs can demonstrate accountability and commitment to serving public interests.

The deployment of RECs is an ongoing process aimed at promoting continuity while addressing evolving needs within each state’s electoral landscape. As guardians of democracy, these officials play a crucial role in safeguarding the integrity of elections and upholding democratic values nationwide.

In closing remarks, Prof. Yakubu reiterated that accountability is non-negotiable within INEC’s mandate. He affirmed that any breaches of conduct would be met with swift consequences, emphasizing that

“we will hold you accountable for your actions…without hesitation.”

As these newly appointed and redeployed RECs assume their roles across various states, they carry forward a shared mission: to ensure free, fair, and credible elections that uphold Nigeria’s democratic principles.
