In Kenya, a tragic incident involving the suspicious death of a teacher and blogger, Albert Ojwang, while in police custody has sparked outrage across the nation. The chain of events leading to Ojwang’s demise began when he was apprehended in Homa Bay, a town in western Kenya, following accusations of defamation on social media by Kenya’s deputy police chief, Eliud Lagat.
Instead of being processed locally as per standard procedures, Ojwang was inexplicably transferred more than 350km (220 miles) away to Nairobi. It was during his time at a police station in the capital that the 31-year-old met his untimely end. The official police account suggests that Ojwang sustained fatal head injuries by hitting his head against a cell wall. However, human rights advocates have expressed serious reservations about this narrative.
Irungu Houghton, director of Amnesty International Kenya, highlighted the concerning circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s death by stating, “This death is very suspicious.” He emphasized the urgent need for an
“independent investigation”
into the treatment Ojwang received while under police custody. Moreover, questions were raised about the legality and necessity of transporting a detainee such a long distance without proper local processing.
In response to mounting public pressure and scrutiny from human rights organizations like Amnesty International, Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja took action by suspending all officers who were on duty at the Nairobi station during Ojwang’s detention. This included even the commanding officer of the station. These suspended officers are currently relieved from active duty and are under investigation with their salaries reduced pending further inquiry.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), entrusted with leading the investigation into this unfortunate incident, has pledged to seek justice diligently. IPOA Chair Ahmed Isaack Hassan stressed their commitment by affirming that they will strive for accountability not just for Ojwang’s family but for all Kenyans affected by such incidents.
Ongoing online discussions and growing public discontent reflect widespread anger over what many perceive as an abuse of power within law enforcement agencies. Civil society groups and concerned citizens are advocating for protests to demand greater transparency and accountability from the police force.
