Through his works like “The Wizard of the Crow,” “Petals of Blood,” “Birth of a Dream Weaver,” and “Decolonizing the Mind,” Ngũgĩ delved into the complexities of society, unearthing truths and challenging norms. His writing was more than just stories; it was a reflection of his passion for his homeland and his people.
Simon Kihura, one of Ngũgĩ’s neighbors and friends, fondly remembers him as “a very kind man
” with deep love for Kenya. In tribute, Kihura expressed heartfelt condolences, saying, “
We are very saddened… He was a man who loved his fellow Kenyans and loved this country.
”
Ngũgĩ’s life was marked by exile and persecution due to his outspoken criticism against President Daniel Moi’s regime. Despite facing attempts on his life and enduring years in exile overseas, he remained steadfast in his commitment to speaking truth to power.
Derek Warker from The New Press confirmed Ngũgĩ’s passing to The Associated Press. While details were scarce, it was known that Ngũgĩ had been undergoing kidney dialysis treatments. Meanwhile, back in Limuru – Ngũgĩ’s home in Kenya – preparations were underway for mourners who would come to pay their respects.
Kenyan President William Ruto hailed Ngũgĩ as “
the towering giant of Kenyan letters,
” recognizing his immense contribution towards social justice and challenging political authority. Indeed, Ngũgĩ’s courage and unwavering dedication have left an indelible mark on Kenya’s literary landscape.
