In a recent statement, the spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Akin Rotimi, addressed the misinformation circulating about lawmakers receiving N1 billion each for constituency projects. He emphasized that these claims are false and misleading.
Rotimi debunked the rumors during a media and civil society roundtable on electoral transparency and accountability. He highlighted that the misinformation originated from a former House of Representatives aspirant who failed to win in the last election.
The video featuring Ayodele Asalu, an APC chieftain in Osun State, suggested that after the removal of petrol subsidy, lawmakers’ project funds increased significantly. Asalu claimed that members now receive N1 billion for projects while senators get at least N2 billion.
Explaining further, Asalu stated,
“If you see a lawmaker executing projects, don’t be fooled into thinking it’s from their personal pocket.”
He highlighted changes in funding allocations post-subsidy removal as reasons for the increased project budgets.
However, Rotimi clarified that such allegations were baseless. He pointed out that individual lawmakers were tasked with engaging directly with their constituents to explain budgetary processes accurately. This approach aimed to address any misconceptions at grassroots levels.
Rotimi expressed concern over how misinformation can impact public perception: “Some people even misconstrue that it’s given to you monthly…not knowing the complex nature of the budgetary process.”
He stressed the importance of transparency and urged lawmakers to communicate effectively with their constituencies. By providing clarity on budget allocation mechanisms, representatives can foster better understanding among citizens regarding government spending and project execution.
The House’s decision not to issue an official statement initially was strategic. It allowed legislators to engage proactively with their communities and educate them about the intricacies of budget planning and implementation.
In conclusion, it is essential for accurate information to prevail in public discourse. Misconceptions surrounding government funding can lead to distrust and confusion among citizens. Through open communication and transparency, lawmakers can bridge gaps in understanding and build trust with those they serve.
