Nigerias HIV Crisis Understanding the High Prevalence in Rivers, Benue, and Akwa Ibom

A new report released by the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has shed light on the alarming rates of HIV cases in various states across Nigeria. According to the “2024 HIV Spectrum Estimates,” it has been revealed that Rivers State is currently grappling with the highest number of Persons Living with HIV (PLWHIV) in the country.

“Rivers State accounts for 208,767 HIV cases, making it a critical hotspot.”

Following closely behind Rivers are Benue State with 202,346 cases and Akwa Ibom with 161,597 cases. These statistics paint a concerning picture of the HIV prevalence in these regions. Lagos State, known as Nigeria’s commercial hub, ranks fourth nationwide with 108,649 reported cases. The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) stands out in the North-Central region with 83,333 reported cases.

The report goes on to highlight that over two million individuals are currently living with HIV throughout Nigeria. This underscores the urgent need for continuous efforts towards prevention strategies, widespread testing initiatives, and improved access to treatment options.
