Nyesom Wike, the former Governor of Rivers State and current Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, made headlines recently with his bold declaration that no one could suspend him from the People Democratic Party (PDP). In a fiery statement to journalists in Abuja, Wike defended his unwavering commitment to the party he helped build.
“I am still in the PDP,”
Wike affirmed.
“I have not seen anybody who would have the guts to tell me, ‘You are not a member of the PDP.’ Who is that? What is his contribution to the party more than me?”
Despite facing criticism for his perceived closeness to the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), Wike maintained that he remains one of the most dedicated and hardworking members of the PDP. His actions, including revoking land titles in Abuja, sparked public debate and scrutiny regarding his loyalty.
During a media parley, Wike addressed concerns over allegations of land rent defaults involving prominent figures like Bode George. He defended his governance style and reforms in FCT by stating,
“Bode George is number 3092… single citizen… non-payment for up to ten years.”
This move underscored Wike’s commitment to accountability and challenging established norms.
Wike also criticized party elders for their lackluster electoral performance in key states like Lagos. He emphasized that true leadership lies in tangible contributions to party growth and success.
“Look at Lagos since 1999—not one House of Assembly, not one House of Reps, not one Senate seat… You make the party popular by what you do.”
In a surprising twist, Wike expressed loyalty towards President Bola Tinubu despite serving under him. He clarified that his involvement transcends partisanship as he strives to support government initiatives and drive positive change.
“I take joy when I step on the toes of big men… Those who say nothing will happen, I say something will happen. And it will,”
declared Wike defiantly. His stance against entitlement and impunity within Nigerian politics reflects a broader call for accountability and integrity among leaders.
While facing criticism from figures like Bode George over party decisions, including property closures due to rent arrears, Wike stood firm on his principles. Despite their political differences, George acknowledged their intertwined history within the party but urged for greater unity and loyalty among members.
Through his unwavering stance on party loyalty amidst controversy, Nyesom Wike continues to navigate Nigeria’s complex political landscape with determination and conviction.
