São Tomé and Príncipe: helping fishers and their future

Early in the morning, as the first light of dawn kisses the shores of Abade on Príncipe Island, Paula Afè Do Espiritu Afonso eagerly makes her way to the beach. The salty breeze carries the scent of the sea, mixing with the earthy aroma of freshly caught fish. The fishermen, who have spent the entire night at sea, return with their bounty – bonito, barracuda, pargo, vermelho, and corvina glistening in the early light. This daily ritual is not just about sustenance; it’s a way of life for the people of São Tomé and Príncipe, a picturesque island nation nestled in the Gulf of Guinea, over 200 km off the coast of Gabon.

Fish, with its rich flavors and vital nutrients, is more than just food here. It is the lifeblood of the nation, providing a crucial source of protein for the islanders. The fisheries sector, deeply intertwined with the cultural fabric of São Tomé and Príncipe, not only sustains thousands of livelihoods but also serves as the primary source of income for many low-income families, second only to cocoa production.

Amidst this backdrop of reliance on the sea, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has launched the FISH4ACP program. This initiative aims to enhance the economic viability and social impact of fisheries and aquaculture value chains in several African, Caribbean, and Pacific countries. By promoting sustainable practices and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, the program seeks to empower local communities, especially women and youth, who play a pivotal role in the sector.

In the quaint village of Abade, Paula is not just a fishmonger; she is a beacon of resilience and entrepreneurship. Together with a group of women, she forms a collective that pools resources to cover expenses and save for the future. Paula, serving as the group’s treasurer, diligently deposits their earnings in the bank each week. In the bustling capital, São Tomé, Francisco Piedade, the CEO of BISTP (Banco Internacional de São Tomé e Príncipe), recognizes the potential of these grassroots initiatives. His bank stands ready to provide financial support to these fishmonger groups, enabling them to expand their operations and reach new markets.

The fisheries industry in São Tomé and Príncipe is predominantly artisanal, focusing on small pelagic species. While the sector holds immense promise for growth in production, processing, and marketing, it faces challenges due to the country’s geographical isolation. This isolation poses a significant barrier to accessing lucrative export markets, hindering the industry’s full potential.

As the sun sets over the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, the future of São Tomé and Príncipe’s fisheries sector hangs in the balance. The success of initiatives like FISH4ACP and the collaborative efforts of individuals like Paula and Francisco are pivotal in shaping a sustainable and prosperous future for the island nation. By leveraging traditional knowledge, embracing innovation, and fostering partnerships, São Tomé and Príncipe can chart a course towards a thriving fisheries sector that not only sustains livelihoods but also preserves the rich marine ecosystems for generations to come.
