Almost five years have passed since the harrowing incident that shook a community to its core. In a heart-wrenching case that sent shockwaves through the Protea magistrate’s court, Retshidisitsoe Moletsane, a 39-year-old scholar transport driver, was finally brought to justice. The court’s verdict echoed the cries for justice as Moletsane was sentenced to life imprisonment for the despicable act he committed against a 16-year-old pupil.
The details of the crime, narrated in court, painted a grim picture of betrayal and abuse of power. National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, revealed the chilling sequence of events that unfolded in November 2020. The victim, having just completed her exam, innocently waited for her fellow students in the taxi driven by Moletsane. Little did she know that this seemingly routine moment would turn into a nightmare.
“The driver then followed her and undressed her, undressed himself and forcefully had sexual intercourse with the victim. He threatened that if she didn’t cooperate, he would call other drivers to also rape her,”
recounted Mjonondwane.
But the horror did not end there. On another occasion that same month, Moletsane callously violated the victim’s trust once more. Instead of taking her home after school, he subjected her to another assault. The victim, desperate to escape the clutches of her abuser, sought refuge in the bathroom only to face further violation. The trauma inflicted upon her manifested in drastic ways, with changes in behavior and multiple suicide attempts. It was only when she collapsed at school that the truth emerged, unraveling a tale of unspeakable anguish.
The court proceedings revealed a stark absence of remorse from the accused. Regional court prosecutor Mmakgadi Mangena underscored the profound breach of trust, emphasizing how Moletsane exploited the victim’s vulnerability and her mother’s trust in entrusting her safety to him.
“The only appropriate sentence for someone who abused his position in such a heinous manner is life imprisonment,”
argued Mangena passionately. The sentence, a resounding declaration of accountability, aimed not only to punish but also to offer a semblance of closure and healing to the traumatized victim.
This case serves as a poignant reminder of the pervasive dangers lurking in seemingly safe spaces. It highlights the urgent need for stringent measures to protect the innocent and hold perpetrators accountable. The collective efforts of dedicated individuals such as Ms. Mangena and Sgt Kunene, who tirelessly pursued justice, stand as a beacon of hope in a world often marred by darkness.
As we reflect on this distressing narrative, let us reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding the vulnerable and ensuring that justice prevails. The scars left by such atrocities may never fully heal, but by standing together and demanding accountability, we can strive to create a safer, more just society for all.
