Snowstorm Hits South Africa: Bitter Cold, Rain, and Destructive Winds Unleashed

The South African Weather Service (Saws) has verified light snowfall across the elevated terrains of the Eastern Cape, notably in its extreme northeastern sectors. Although snowfall observations have been scarce to date, Saws forecaster Lehlogonolo Thobela has warned of persistently frigid conditions in these regions, anticipating further snowfall later today. Particularly, the Drakensberg mountains and Lesotho are slated to receive snow, with reports of light snow already in parts of the Lesotho mountains.

Thobela highlighted concerns not only about the snow but also the anticipated damaging and destructive winds along the Eastern Cape’s coastline and nearby inland areas. Notably, disruptive and harmful winds are expected, with destructive waves projected along various coastal stretches. The forecast includes rain, with isolated to scattered showers anticipated in the eastern regions of the Eastern Cape and along the KwaZulu-Natal coast.

Looking ahead to Thursday, a continued 30% chance of showers and rain is predicted mainly along the east coast. Coastal conditions are expected to remain turbulent, with high seas and disruptive waves anticipated from Cape Agulhas to Richards Bay. While the interior regions are not expected to receive precipitation, cold temperatures will persist, especially in northeastern provinces like Gauteng, Mpumalanga, North West, and parts of Limpopo through the weekend.
