Solo Female Travel Revolution Africas Appeal Grows for Adventurous Women

There’s a growing trend in the world of travel – solo female adventurers are taking the lead! According to global travel brand, Virtuoso, women now represent a significant 71% of solo travelers. In the US, searches for ‘solo female travel’ surged by 131% last year compared to 2023. The rise of social media has also brought forth a myriad of Instagram accounts, Facebook groups, and Reddit communities dedicated to showcasing women’s solo journeys.

While destinations in Europe like Italy, Spain, and Portugal continue to be popular choices for solo travelers, regions in Latin America such as Peru, Costa Rica, and Ecuador as well as Asian countries like India, Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam are also gaining traction.

However, it seems that Africa is emerging as the next frontier for solo female explorers. Women-led safaris are reshaping the classic Big 5 safari experience into something more authentic, immersive, and sustainable. Antoinette Turner from Flight Centre South Africa points out that countries like Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana, and South Africa are becoming hotspots for solo travelers seeking unique experiences untouched by mass tourism.

“Africa is increasingly sought after by solo female travelers due to its vast open spaces offering authentic experiences,”

explains Turner.

“Unlike heavily crowded tourist spots elsewhere in the world, Africa allows room for self-reflection and fun without the usual pressures of daily life.”

Kgomotso Ramothea from ATTA® highlights how women-only safaris have gained prominence in Africa’s tourism landscape according to a recent whitepaper published by their organization.

“It’s not about segregating men or seeking empowerment through women-only groups,”

states Ramothea.

“Women are simply looking for flexibility and the chance to explore Africa on their own terms at their own pace.”

Diversity is key when catering to the varied preferences of female travelers. Operators who can offer customized experiences blending adventure with cultural immersion will stand out in this evolving market.

Turner emphasizes the potential for developing safe yet flexible itineraries beyond traditional wildlife safaris. For example:

In Rwanda – a tour of Kigali (considered one of Africa’s safest cities), visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial site,
experiencing a women-led coffee farm tour,
and enjoying a private game drive in Akagera National Park.
Flight Centre’s latest Global Travel Survey from January 2025 noted that women travelers prioritize safety above all else while valuing freedom and flexibility during their trips.

“Safety remains paramount along with preparedness,”

affirms Turner.

“Researching destinations thoroughly and choosing reliable partners with expertise in solo travel ensures an enriching experience.”

The surge in exclusive travel companies tailored specifically for women signals a remarkable shift towards more females embarking on African adventures. Turner applauds operators who design eco-friendly itineraries that resonate with female travelers’ desire for sustainability and enriching experiences across all age groups.

Female travellers seeking unique adventures should take inspiration from these trailblazing trends shaping today’s vibrant travel landscape!
