After enduring the horrors of civil war, the resilient residents of Hai Matar village in South Sudan have finally returned home. The year 2013 marked the beginning of a devastating conflict that uprooted families and shattered communities, forcing them to seek refuge at a United Nations Protection of Civilians site in Malakal, Upper Nile.
Twelve long years later, these displaced individuals are reclaiming their land, stepping into 128 new shelters thoughtfully constructed by compassionate humanitarians. The journey back has been filled with mixed emotions – relief, hope, and a tinge of uncertainty. Many returnees also include those who fled the brutal warfare in neighboring Sudan, seeking solace and stability within their homeland.
Mary Aban Akon, a grateful returnee expressed her joy and gratitude for the newfound sense of security and belonging, saying:
“I am so happy for the house that the humanitarians built for us. I am living here with my children after returning from Sudan. The presence of police stationed in our area provides security and peace. They conduct patrols at night, ensuring harmony among neighbors.”
While embracing the comfort of familiar surroundings, concerns loom over lingering challenges such as insecurity and limited access to essential services like clean water, healthcare facilities, and education for their children. The State government remains vigilant in overseeing this delicate return process to mitigate potential conflicts arising from disputes over landownership.
