Steve Lillywhite A Music Legends Journey to Honorary Degree Glory

Five-time Grammy-winning record producer, Steve Lillywhite, hailing from Egham, recently had a remarkable moment in the spotlight when he was bestowed with an honorary degree by the prestigious University of Surrey. Known for his exceptional work with iconic bands such as U2, The Rolling Stones, The Killers, and Talking Heads over his illustrious five-decade career in the music industry, Lillywhite’s contribution to the world of music is unparalleled.

In a heartfelt acceptance speech on May 1st, the Egham-born producer expressed his gratitude for the recognition by saying it was “very humbling and very lovely.” Reflecting on his unconventional educational journey, Lillywhite shared an inspiring anecdote about leaving secondary school after completing only O-levels. He admitted being taken aback by the honor bestowed upon him at the University of Surrey.

“I did not even finish secondary school. I did O-levels and then I was asked to leave, so I was amazed by today,” he said with humility.

Lillywhite drew parallels between this accolade and receiving a CBE for services to music in the 2012 New Year Honours list. Recounting his experience at Buckingham Palace during that time, he noted how this recent honor at the university added a new level of grandeur with ceremonial robes and certificates.

During his visit to the University of Surrey, Lillywhite had the opportunity to tour its state-of-the-art facilities and engage with enthusiastic current students whom he described as “fantastic.” Witnessing their passion for learning left a profound impact on him as he remarked on their dedication to making a positive difference in society.

“When you see young people and the enthusiasm they have for doing good, you realize that yes, we’ll muck through it,” Lillywhite acknowledged warmly.

Offering valuable advice to aspiring musicians and students alike during his visit, Lillywhite emphasized following one’s heart and encouraged individuals not to blindly adhere to everything their teachers impart. He stressed fostering individuality by questioning conventional wisdom while extracting valuable lessons from mentors.

“You enter cult status by doing that. Always question the teachers and take from them what you think is good for you,” he advised earnestly.

Despite achieving immense success throughout his career, Lillywhite candidly revealed battling feelings of imposter syndrome but maintained that striving relentlessly without succumbing to complacency has been integral to his journey in music.

The University of Surrey also honored other distinguished personalities including scientists Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell and Prof Peter Høj as well as businessmen Alan Parker, John Mullen, and Lim Hua Min. Praising these exceptional individuals’ significant contributions spanning various fields like science, education arts business among others…

‘Outstanding Individuals’

University of Surrey vice-chancellor Prof Max Lu lauded these honorees saying:

“We are proud to recognize these outstanding individuals whose work has made a lasting impact across science…”.
