In the serene outskirts of Makambako in Tanzania’s Njombe Region lies Emmaberg Girls High School, where a remarkable transformation is taking place. Imagine a school where students used to struggle during power cuts, forced to fetch water from a river shared with cattle. The daily routine was marred by unreliable water supply, cold showers due to lack of hot water, and pitch-black dormitories when the national grid electricity failed.
But now, thanks to an innovative project born out of collaboration between the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (Southern Diocese), SchuPa Tansania, and funding from SchuPa and Bavaria State Chancellery of Germany, this school is witnessing a revolutionary change. No longer will the students face the hardships they once endured.
Empowering Change Through Solar Technology
The heart of this transformation lies in a towering 4-meter water structure that has tripled the school’s water tank capacity from 10m3 to 30m3. Picture it – gleaming solar panels stand tall under the African sun, replacing the erratic national grid electricity with efficiency and sustainability. With a 7.2kW solar PV plant at its core, this system now efficiently pumps water using energy-saving devices like pump dry-run sensors and tank-overflow controls.
A Brighter Future with Solar Energy
Gone are the days of chilly showers; two solar water heaters have been installed with impressive capacities of 1,500 liters and 2,700 liters each. Now, warm showers are just a turn of the tap away for these students. And as night falls over Emmaberg Girls High School, dormitories light up effortlessly powered by two solar PV systems rated at 0.9kWp and 1.8kWp each.
But it doesn’t stop there – knowledge is power too! Teachers have been equipped with training on maintaining solar systems while 200 eager students have been enlightened about renewable energy practices and optimal use of solar technology.
