Tarik Saleh returns to Cannes with explosive political thriller ‘Eagles of the Republic’

Swedish-Egyptian director Tarik Saleh has once again captured the attention of Cannes with his latest film, “Eagles of the Republic,” marking the final installment of his politically charged trilogy based in Cairo. This anticipated film brings together Saleh and his longtime collaborator, Fares Fares, in a riveting narrative that is vying for the prestigious Palme d’Or at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.

Building on the success of his previous works, “The Nile Hilton Incident” (2017) and “Cairo Conspiracy” (2022), Saleh delves deeper into the complexities of Egypt’s capital, not merely as a physical locale but as a potent symbol of psychological and political turmoil. In Saleh’s words, Cairo symbolizes conquest and is imbued with feminine energy, representing the idea of breaking an individual under immense pressure.

The storyline of “Eagles of the Republic” follows the journey of George Fahmy, portrayed by the talented Fares Fares, a renowned Egyptian actor who finds himself entangled in a government-sponsored film project. What initially appears as a professional obligation soon transforms into a personal quandary when Fahmy embarks on a forbidden romance with the wife of a high-ranking general overseeing the production.

Fares Fares, who embodies the protagonist in Saleh’s trilogy, shared the emotional intensity of portraying a character on the brink of moral erosion. He emphasized the challenge of portraying a man gradually losing his essence until he is a mere shell of his former self. This intricate character study delves into the complexities of human nature and the thin line between right and wrong.

Despite facing official prohibition in Egypt and being declared persona non grata, Saleh managed to assemble a cast predominantly comprising Egyptian actors, showcasing their resilience and commitment to storytelling despite potential repercussions. The film also boasts a talented ensemble including French-Algerian actress Lyna Khoudri and Moroccan actress Zineb Triki, accompanied by a mesmerizing musical score by acclaimed composer Alexandre Desplat, a two-time Oscar winner.

“Eagles of the Republic” serves as a poignant critique of authoritarianism under the regime of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, shedding light on themes of power dynamics, ethical dilemmas, and systemic corruption prevalent in the Arab world. Saleh’s unyielding exploration of these societal issues through his cinematic lens challenges viewers to confront uncomfortable truths and reflect on the state of governance and morality in contemporary society.

As the Cannes Film Festival draws to a close, all eyes are on whether Saleh’s bold and incisive narrative will garner the highest accolades. The buzz surrounding “Eagles of the Republic” underscores its significance as a compelling work of art that not only entertains but also provokes deep introspection on the complexities of human behavior and the enduring struggle for integrity in the face of adversity.
