President Donald Trump’s senior adviser for Africa, Massad Boulos, recently engaged in discussions with the presidents of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) regarding a potential peace plan. This move comes at a crucial time as Washington aims to resolve the longstanding conflict in the region.
In an exclusive interview held in Washington DC, Boulos revealed that he had deliberations with Rwandan President Paul Kagame and DRC President Felix Tshisekedi concerning a draft agreement. The United States is eagerly awaiting final feedback from both countries by this weekend on the proposed peace deal.
“We are hopeful that with potential amendments and adjustments, we can reach a conclusive agreement within the upcoming weeks,”
expressed Boulos optimistically about the ongoing negotiations.
The Trump administration has been actively involved in mediating peace agreements across various regions globally. In this instance, their focus extends to securing access to vital minerals such as tantalum, gold, cobalt, copper, and lithium present in abundance within the conflicted region.
As reported by TimesLIVE, Boulos emphasized that both President Kagame and President Tshisekedi expressed satisfaction with the progress made thus far.
“It was very positive from both of them,”
shared Boulos.
“They’re both looking forward to working collaboratively towards achieving sustainable peace.”
Efforts to end the conflict have intensified following a recent proposal submitted by DRC and Rwanda aimed at ceasing hostilities in eastern DRC while simultaneously attracting significant Western investments. The collaborative work between all parties involved has culminated in the development of a comprehensive draft agreement currently under review.
“We anticipate receiving final input from Rwandan and DRC officials shortly,”
stated Boulos during Thursday’s briefing.
“Upon completing this phase of negotiations, Secretary Rubio is poised to facilitate further discussions here.”
This diplomatic initiative transpires amidst escalating tensions due to advances made by Rwandan-supported M23 rebels within eastern DRC territory resulting in casualties and mass displacements. The situation underscores the urgency for swift action towards reconciliation and stability within the region.
As reported by TimesLIVE [SOURCE], it is evident that all stakeholders are committed to forging a path towards lasting peace through collective efforts involving key players like Qatar and the African Union.
