Digging for Glassy Treasures Unearthing Family Bonds Through Bottle Hunting

My family and I have a peculiar yet endearing hobby – we hunt for old bottles. It all began on a soggy weekend when we stumbled upon this treasure-hunting pastime by pure chance.

One sunny day, during a visit to our family farm, we ventured into a shady gully below the house. As the kids played around, one of them tripped over an ancient artifact hidden in the mud – a round, honey-hued medicine bottle. This serendipitous find sparked our curiosity and set us on a delightful journey of discovery.

The magic of that moment led us to uncover more relics from the past buried in the rain-softened shadows of the gully. Each bottle told a unique story – from flat hip flask-like medicine containers to crystal-clear soft drink bottles bearing traces of vintage beverages like

“Orange Sip”

. These glassy time capsules had withstood decades of nature’s forces before resurfacing as if beckoned by the rain.

“The kids’ grandad was our original bottle digger. He’s been gone four years now but, like those bottles of his, he’s still catching the light around the place.”

As we continued unearthing these relics, memories of our beloved grandad flooded back. He was our guiding light into this world of forgotten treasures. His collection once adorned farmhouse windowsills, transformed into vases for delicate native orchids – a testament to his love for both history and nature.

Our newfound hobby piqued curiosity about the potential value of these antique bottles. Despite some online sleuthing revealing no hidden fortunes, we found joy in connecting with history through embossed labels like

“Poison: Not to be taken”

or brand imprints from renowned breweries.

Throughout subsequent digging expeditions, our collection grew steadily – each intact bottle adding character and charm to our finds. Whether slender or stout, pale or dark, every glass curve held stories waiting to be unraveled.

“The gully has surrendered miraculously intact bottles of all shapes, colours and sizes.”

Delving deeper into this age-old practice revealed a rich history dating back to privies and rubbish heaps where discarded vessels found their final resting place. The art of bottle digging not only offers glimpses into bygone eras but also presents an opportunity to appreciate craftsmanship that stood against time’s relentless march.

While some may view old bottles as mere trinkets lacking glamour compared to precious stones or metals, for us they are priceless gems embodying resilience and nostalgia encapsulated in fragile glass forms.

“For us, sifting for bottles together never gets old…the chance that something lovely might just decide to be found after laying hidden for generations.”

Despite being novice enthusiasts in this vast realm of antique collecting and historical excavation, our familial bond grows stronger with each shared moment spent unearthing these treasures unearthed from forgotten times.

We raise a toast to grandad as each glinting glass fragment catches the light – reminding us that sometimes true riches lie not in material wealth but in cherished memories shared with loved ones amidst simple pleasures unearthed from the earth’s embrace.
