Decades of dedicated chimpanzee conservation efforts in Sierra Leone face a looming threat that could jeopardize the existence of a sanctuary nestled in the rainforest near Freetown. The Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, a refuge for rescued chimps from all corners of the country, is now battling against illegal encroachment that encroaches upon its boundaries, perilously close to Sierra Leone’s capital.
Despite stringent wildlife laws, the sanctuary is witnessing areas of forest being unlawfully cleared for slash-and-burn farming, cattle ranching, and the construction of residences that inch closer to chimp enclosures. This encroachment not only poses a direct threat to the sanctuary’s borders but also endangers the habitat of the rescued chimpanzees, causing them to perceive even the sanctuary staff as intruders.
“You can see how they are reacting, imagine on that side when we don’t even know who is coming there now. That’s where the danger will come,”
remarks Bala Amarasekaran, the sanctuary’s founder, as he gestures towards a distressed chimp behind a fence. The diminishing territory of the chimps underscores the urgency of the situation, prompting the sanctuary to take a bold stance by ceasing visitor access to concentrate on conservation, rehabilitation, and research efforts.
Despite the closure to tourists, the dedicated staff continues to provide care to over 120 rescue chimps of varying ages, with each new arrival serving as a poignant reminder of the ongoing threats faced by these incredible creatures. Amarasekaran expresses a mix of dedication and frustration, stating,
“Every time a baby chimp arrives, people think ‘Oh well, you’re doing a good job, you were able to confiscate a chimp and rescue a chimp and bring it here.’ But for me, as founder of the sanctuary, I feel defeated because this chimp shouldn’t be arriving here.”
One of the sanctuary’s recent additions, baby Asana, symbolizes hope as he gradually recuperates from the trauma of being captured as an illegal pet. While the sanctuary remains a sanctuary of joy for the resident chimps, the staff grapple with concerns about the uncertain future. Sidikie Bayoh, the sanctuary’s communications officer, voices the worry that if the closure persists, future generations of Sierra Leoneans may miss out on the opportunity to connect with their national animal and understand the importance of conservation efforts.
The financial impact of the closure is also significant, as the absence of visitor revenue coincides with a pause in USAID funding. Amarasekaran acknowledges the challenges ahead, noting,
“In the absence of funding at the moment from the U.S. government, it is going to be difficult for us to turn around quickly, but we are very resilient. We are like chimpanzees, so we will manage somehow.”
